Photography has been a part of Bruce’s life since his early teens when he discovered pre-1950 cameras in his grandmother’s attic. From the utilitarian use of a camera for family snap shots and school sports pictures, to organizing and running a photography club as a teacher in a high school, his interest in photography as an art form grew.
In the seventies and eighties he developed his skills in a black and white darkroom. This sparked his interest in landscape photography and the move to colour photography followed soon after.
His first exhibition and sale of photographs came at the Schoolhouse Art Show and Sale in 1997. He has exhibited at Art in Public Spaces at the Capitol Centre on two occasions, and has exhibited and sold his photographs at a number of different Arts and Crafts shows each year in the North Bay area.
Bruce served on the Board of Directors of the North Bay and Area Arts Council for three years, and in that capacity he co-chaired the Arts Council’s Photography Contest in 2004. He has completed photography courses with James Forsyth and David Lewis, and a Business of Art workshop with Visual Arts Ontario.
Bruce has had five photographs selected for the Community Voices newspaper front page. His photographs grace the walls of businesses, offices and homes in Toronto, Kitchener, the Muskokas, Sudbury and North Bay.
Over the past ten years, the colours of fall and the movement of water and mist have become of special interest to Bruce. The prominence of water is evident in many of his landscapes. He has always had a fascination with capturing the feeling of movement and power that is the essence of water.
His photographic interests are eclectic in nature. With the digital revolution he has started to use the computer and Photoshop to produce some interpreted photographs.
