It is from both contemporary and mythical contexts that David questions who and what we are, where we came from, and into what void we are going. The landscape is very present in his work, which he juxtaposes with imagery drawn from a myriad of sources, including oral and written myths, history, current socio-political conditions, scientific theory, and charts and maps.
David’s art comes to life through what he calls “the challenges and associations [arising] from working with a variety of media which require acts of forming, cutting, gouging, and firing: acts which are in sympathy with my personal mythology, and in sympathy with my roots in the hills and rock of the Canadian North.” For David, the resulting works form a continuing personal mythology.
